Kaasi yaatra
Kashi Yatra is a significant, playful ritual in South Indian (especially Tamil Brahmin) weddings where the groom pretends to abandon married life to become a hermit in Kashi (Varanasi) to seek knowledge. The bride’s father or brother stops him, persuading him to return, marry, and fulfill householder duties (Grihasthashrama).
Maalai Matral (Garland Exchange)
Maalai Maatral, or the exchange of garlands, is a significant Tamil Hindu wedding ritual symbolizing the couple's mutual acceptance, union of souls, and equality. Traditionally, the bride and groom garland each other three times, often playfully resisted by relatives, to signify their promise to stand together in joy and sorrow.
Oonjal( Swing ceremony)
The Oonjal (swing) ceremony is a traditional South Indian wedding ritual, primarily in Tamil Brahmin (Iyer/Iyengar) weddings, where the bride and groom sit on a decorated swing. Married women sway them back and forth, singing traditional songs, symbolizing the ups and downs of life and offering blessings
Wedding
The couple proceeds to key rituals including Kanyadaan (giving away the bride), Kankana Dharanam (tying the holy thread), the tying of the Mangalsutra (Thali), and the Saptapadi (seven steps). These core wedding rites signify the formal union.
