Haldi
The Haldi ceremony is a vibrant and intimate affair filled with laughter, blessings, and turmeric paste! In this ritual, a special mixture made from turmeric (haldi), sandalwood, rose water, and sometimes a bit of milk or oil is applied to the bride or groom’s face, neck, hands, and feet by close family and friends. The yellow color of haldi is considered auspicious, symbolizing purity, good luck, and warding off evil spirits. The atmosphere is usually light-hearted and fun, with everyone dressed in yellow attire, adding to the warm, golden glow of the occasion. Music, dhols (drums), traditional songs, dancing, and playful teasing are all part of the celebration. Sometimes, guests even smear each other with haldi in a cheerful riot of yellow! The ceremony also holds a practical purpose: turmeric is known for its skin-brightening and antiseptic properties, so it gives the bride or groom a natural glow before the wedding day.
Marriage
Arrival of the Groom: The groom arrives at the church, often with his family, and is welcomed by the bride's side. Bridal Procession: The bride walks down the aisle, usually with her father, to the tune of the wedding march. Guests stand in reverence. Exchange of Vows: The couple exchange vows, either traditional or personalized, promising love, faithfulness, and unity. Exchange of Rings: Symbolizing their eternal commitment. Bible Reading and Sermon: A priest or pastor delivers readings and a message about love and marriage. Nuptial Blessing: The couple kneels for blessings and prayers.
Reception and Sangeeth
Grand Entry of the Couple: Sometimes with sparklers, music, or even dance. Cake Cutting: A Western influence—often a multi-tiered cake. Speeches & Toasts: Family or friends share emotional or funny moments. First Dance: Romantic and memorable. Dinner & Drinks: Multi-course meal or buffet with Indian, fusion, or international cuisines. Open Dance Floor: DJ takes over, and it’s a full-on party! Dance Performances: Family and friends prepare choreographed dances, often telling the couple's love story or teasing each other in fun ways. Singing & Music: Live music, DJ sets, dhol beats, or even traditional folk music (like Garba or Punjabi songs). Couple's Dance: The bride and groom often have a special first performance. Food & Drinks: A lavish spread and cocktails/mocktails flowing. Outfits & Glam: It's a fashion moment—think lehengas, sarees, Indo-Western outfits, glitter, and glam!
