Haldi (Turmeric) and Mehendi
The Mehendi ceremony is a celebration of beauty and anticipation. The bride’s hands and feet are adorned with intricate henna designs, which serve as a symbolic "cooling" treatment to soothe wedding jitters. It is said that the darker the henna stain, the deeper the groom’s love and the stronger the bond with the mother-in-law. Look closely at the bride's palms—the groom’s initials are hidden within the patterns, and he must find them later as his first "test" of marriage. The Haldi ceremony is perhaps the most playful and emotional part of an Indian wedding. Family and friends apply a paste made of turmeric (haldi), sandalwood, and rose water to the bride and groom’s face, neck, hands, and feet. Every person who applies the paste is offering their blessings for a bright and prosperous life together.
